Course content

Unit 1: Administrative systems in the organisation
This unit provides students with the framework and tools for applying the systems
approach to managing systems as an integrative activity. Dynamic organisational
issues are addressed, including those involving complex problems characterised
by uncertainty. Students will be required to critically evaluate how the process
and tools of quality management can be used in the design, implementation and
management of customer centred systems.

Unit 2: Strategic issues in administration
Administration is a key element of a wider business and environmental context.
This unit introduces students to some of the key concepts of higher-level business
discourse and develops student awareness of the contemporary issues that are
essential to successful promotional development.

Unit 3: Administrative management of resources
The aim of this unit is to develop knowledge and understanding of the key
principles involved in managing organisational resources and to provide an
appreciation of the tools and techniques associated with managing finance,
projects and facilities. Students will critically appraise and employ the formal
methods used in project planning and control, apply various financial techniques
and examine the activities, functions and legal implications of facilities
management.

Unit 4: Human resource management and practice
Effective management in the organisation requires knowledge and understanding
of the theory and practice of human resources. This is achieved by critically
analysing models of personnel management and human resource management
and evaluating leadership theories. The unit also aims to develop skills that will
enable managers to help individuals set and achieve realistic goals and objectives
and improve bottom line organisational performance.

Unit 5: Case study 2 or project report 2
The case study paper is an integrative examination designed to test students’
knowledge and application of that knowledge to a ‘real life’ situation. A scenario
will be provided and questions on it will be aimed at testing knowledge across the
whole of the syllabus. Alternatively, the student may submit a project report.
